Kenya Black tea is made from the leaves of the camellia sinensis plant, and what distinguishes it from other types of tea is its full oxidation. It is one of the most popular and widely consumed types of tea in the world, known for its bold flavor, dark color, and robust characteristics. Black tea grades include BP1, PF1, PD and D1
Kenya is the world’s biggest exporter of black tea. Our black tea is processed from fresh tea leaves that are allowed to ferment completely before drying. Our black tea is produced using two different production methods – Orthodox or Crush Tear Curl (CTC). The crush-tear-curl production method forms small-granule teas referred to as CTC teas. These colourful teas are strong and aromatic, known to pair well with milk and sugar.
- Broken Pekoe 1: With the largest grain particles,Broken Pekoe 1 produces liquors with sweet flavours that are light in body. Largest size of ‘grain’ particles and it produces liquors that are a bit light in body but with encouraging flavoring characteristics.
- Pekoe Fannings 1 (PF1): Black and grainy with particles slightly smaller in size than those of the BP1 grade.
- Pekoe Dust (PD): Pekoe Dust granules are finer than those of the PF1. Tea brewed from Pekoe Dust produces thick, pungent liquors.
- Dust: The finest tea particles of the CTC grade.
- Broken Mixed Fannings (BMF): With fibrous particles with very little trace of black teas.
- Broken Pekoe (BP): Broken Pekoe granules are the largest size particles. This is a full-bodied, bright tea with flavour but less strength.
- Fannings 1 (F1): Black leaf with more fibre. For quick brew, strong flavour and good colour qualities.
- Pekoe Fanning (PF): Pekoe Fanning’s Tea is a fairly cleaner looking smaller broken leaf grade with a neat appearance.
